Abstract
1,196,842. Sealing cable joints. PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd. 17 Feb., 1969 [27 March, 1968], No. 14657/68. Heading H2E. A cable joint enclosed in a metal casing 1 is surrounded by a jacket 4 through which flows coolant preferably water, the jacket having insulative walls 5, 6, preferably of P.V.C., wall 5 being in good thermal contact with casing 1. Any space between wall 5 and casing 1 may be filled with thermosetting resin. Wall 5 is bonded to wall 6 which is reinforced by glass fibre reinforced resin laminate 9. Jacket 4 may be preformed or formed on the casing 3. In the former case, the jacket 4 may comprise two sealed longitudinal halves (Fig. 2, not shown). Jacket 4 is sealed at its ends by glass fibre boxes 10, 11, preferably containing bitumen. Casing 3 is insulated from sheath 2<1> of a fluid-impregnated cable at 12.
