Abstract
1,196,664. Unsaturated polyesters. CHEMISCHE WERKE ALBERT. 5 June, 1967 [4 June, 1966], No. 25789/67. Headings C3P and C3R. Unsaturated polyesters having a chemically built in accelerator are made by polyesterifying components necessary for the production of an unsaturated polyester in the presence of (a) a cobalt or vanadium salt of a partial ester of a polycarboxylic and a mono- or polyhydric alcohol, or (b) a cobalt or vanadium salt of an acid volatile under the polyesterification conditions, e.g. carbonic or acetic acid. The polyester-forming components may include halogen or phosphorus-containing compounds. In examples, the resins were made by reacting maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, 1 : 2- propylene glycol, and (1) cobalt-(II)-1,2-propanediol phthalate, (2) cobalt-(II)-butyl phthalate, or (3) cobalt-(II)-carbonate. The polyesters are cold curable upon the addition of an unsaturated monomer (especially styrene) and a peroxide catalyst (especially cyclohexanone peroxide).
