Apparatus for heat setting the uppers of lasted shoes S includes a cabinet 2 having a chamber 6 in which the shoes can be subjected to a hot moist atmosphere, a fan 32 which circulates the atmosphere round a closed path including a chamber 6, an outlet duct 38, a source of steam 24 and an inlet duct 28, and a flap 52 which diverts the atmosphere from the closed path when a door in the cabinet is opened. The steam is generated at a boiler 25, is drawn past heaters 30 in the inlet duct 28, passes through the chamber 6 and is returned to the boiler 25 by the fan 32 through outlet duct 38. The cabinet 2 has entry and exit doors 8, 10 which can be raised by air motors 12, 14. At the same time as the doors 8, 10 are opened an air motor 64 turns a crank 60, 58 to move a flap 52 to close the outlet duct 38 and to allow the atmosphere to escape through a duct 54. The escaping atmosphere enters a dispersal chamber 46 having a fan 44 where it is forced through a layer of foam material 48. The shoes are moved through the chamber 6 by a conveyer belt 68 which is advanced intermittently by an air motor 82 acting through a chain 86, sprocket 90 and a free wheel device (not shown). The apparatus has an automatic control circuit which causes the doors 8, 10 to open each time the conveyer 68 is advanced and the shoes remain in the chamber 6 during two dwell periods e.g. two minutes. The atmosphere in the chamber 6 preferably has a temperature of 130‹C. to 135‹C. and a dew-point temperature of 70‹C. to 90‹C.
