Abstract

1,196,430. Check-out counter. UNITED STEEL & WIRE CO. 27 Dec., 1967 [17 Jan., 1967], No. 58692/67. Heading A4T. A supermarket counter 13, Figs. 4, 22, has a sloping bottomed cart 11 wheeled against one end 22 with the wheels astride a platform 75, Figs 4, 7, 22. An operator moves pedal 36 and cable 98 to swing sprung levers 81, 82 through platform slots 76, 76 to abut the cart wheel supports and press the cart into close position to close limits witches 93, 94. A plate 68, Figs. 4, 22, engages loop 191 of a downwardly opening bottom cart gate 186, 196 held up by a torsion rod and releases gate latch 206, while a top, forwardly-hinged, front cart gate 157 attaches to magnet 41 on lever 37. Through a relay circuit the operator energises a motor at 44 which rotates an edge cam 42 moving lever 52 and a groove cam 49 moving lever 51. Lever 52 tensions cable 69 which via pulley 70, pivots at 64 plate 68 on lever 67 and the plate pulls gate 186 open downwards thereby releasing gate 157, the cable also, via link 102, holding tensioned cable 98 for release of pedal 36. Following this, lever 51 pulls cable 58, rotates lever and magnet 37, 41 clockwise and opens front gate 157. The cams momentarily actuate a limit switch which stops cam rotation and also stops a motor driving conveyer 19 preventing damage to goods sliding off the cart bottom. The operator then energizes motors driving horizontal conveyer 19 and rising conveyer 21, the latter carrying automatic variable height support flaps, whereby the goods are fed towards a checking point facing a cash register or electronic scanner. The circuit allows for closing the gates and releasing the cart. The front gate swings inwardly for nesting the carts, and a foldable baby seat compartment is provided.
