Abstract

[Also in Division C3] The properties of the surface of a polyester film is modified by first exposing the surface to an ethylenically unsaturated monomer to form a surface layer impregnated with monomer at least 100 Š units thick and then subjecting the layer to ultra-violet radiation having wavelengths between 1800 and 4000 Š units until a superficial layer of copolymer of the polester and monomer having a thickness of 100 to 10,000 Š units is formed. The process is carried out in the substantial absence of oxygen for such monomers as acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, 2-vinylpyridine or isopropyl vinyl ether. When the monomer is vinyl acetate oxygen may or may not be present. The films, fibres, fabrics can be made from the linear condensation products of glycols or polyglycols with dicarboxylic organic acids which are aromatic in nature. Films made by condensing terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol or trimethylene glycol or their mixtures e.g. polyethylene terephthalate are particularly important.
