Abstract

1,194,704. Polyester films and filaments. KANEGAFUCHI BOSEKI K.K. 11 May, 1967 [11 May, 1966], No. 21870/67. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] The stickiness of copolyester films and fibres is reduced by incorporating into the copolyester a polyolefin, a polybutadiene or a paraffin wax in an amount of 0À01 to 25% by weight of the copolyester. The copolyester compositions may be extruded by themselves into films or fibres but preferably are used in the manufacture of composite filaments by separately melting the copolyester composition and a homopolyester or different copolyester, and extruding the two melts through the same orifice to form a single filament in which the two polyesters extend in side-by-side conjugated relationship along the entire length of the filament. In Example I, the following copolyester compositions were melt spun and the resulting filaments lubricated with an aqueous oil emulsion, (i) copoly-(ethylene terephthalate adipate) with polyethylene; (ii) a copolyester of ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol and terephthalic acid with polyethylene, (iii) a copolyester of ethylene glycol, terephthalic acid and adipic acid with polypropylene, (iv) a block copolyester of poly- (ethylene diphenoxyethane-4:4<SP>1</SP>-dicarboxylate) and poly-(1:10-decylene diphenoxyethane-4:4<SP>1</SP>- dicarboxylate) with polyethylene, (v) a copolyester of p-(beta-hydroxyethoxy) benzoic acid, 1:10-decanedicarboxylic acid and triethylene glycol with paraffin wax. In Example 2, composite filaments were made by extruding together polyethylene terephthalate and a mixture of a copolyester of ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol and terephthalic acid with polyethylene, the resulting filaments being lubricated with an aqueous oil emulsion, wound and possibly drawn 5 x at 80‹ C. In Example 3, a composition of a copolyester of ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol and terephthalic acid with polyethylene was melt extruded at 260‹ C. through a T-die into a film. In Example 4, composite filaments were made in a manner similar to that in Example 2 by extruding together (a) a copolyester of ethylene glycol, terephthalic acid and isophthalic acid and a composition of a copolyester of ethylene glycol, terephthalic acid and adipic acid with polyethylene, (b) a polyester of p-(beta-hydroxyethoxy)-benzoic acid and a composition of a copolyester of ethylene glycol, polycaprolactone diol and terephthalic acid with paraffin wax.
