Abstract

1,194,766. Polyethylene compositions. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 26 June, 1968, No. 30491/68. Heading C3P. [Also in Divisions C1 and H1] A hyperconductive graphite structure having a density of at least 0.07 g./c.c. comprising a compressed vermicular graphite containing between 0.5 and 35 wt. per cent of an intercalating agent selected from Br 2 , FeCl 3 , CrO 2 Cl 2 , SO3, SbCl 5 , CrCl 3 , ICl, CrO 3 , AuCl 3 , InCl 3 , PtCl 4 , CrO 2 F 2 , TaCl 5 , SmCl 3 , ZrCl 4 , UCl 4 , or YCl 3 , is blended with up to 35 wt. per cent of an organic binder such as polyethylene, polyurethanes, phenolformaldehyde or epoxy resins. In Example 8, vermicular graphite is blended with polyethylene powder in a 3:1 wt. ratio and biaxially compressed. The polyethylene was fused by heating the compact to 150‹ C. and a slice of the compact was then immersed in liquid B1 2 . The compact swelled but did not fracture and was found to have specific resistance of 152 microhm-inches.
