Abstract
1,194,759. Catalytic burners; burning waste gases. UNITED-CARR Inc. 14 Oct., 1968 [13 Oct., 1967], No. 48556/68. Headings F4T and F4W. A catalytic burner unit 10 is provided in the outlet vent in the top wall of an oven to burn off hydrocarbon smoke and comprises a strip of fibrous material 20 coated with a noble metal catalyst, e.g. palladium or platinum on a three-quarter inch strip of asbestos, and a strip of corrugated metal 18, e.g. stainless or aluminized steel, wrapped together into a coil contained in a cylindrical housing 16 by transverse bars 26, 28 at the cylinder ends. A heater is provided close below the unit 10. The strip 20 is coated with catalyst by passing it through a suspension of the catalyst in a highly polar flammable liquid with a relatively high boiling point, e.g. cyclo-hexanene and burning off the liquid to leave the metal mechanically adhered to the strip.
