Abstract
1,194,523. Making methanol synthesis gas. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 15 Jan., 1969 [27 Jan., 1968], No. 2496/69. Heading C5E. In a process for making methanol synthesis gas in which a normally gaseous hydrocarbon is cracked in a furnace with steam and C0 2 , the C0 2 is obtained by recovery from the furnace flue gases after the gases have been freed of O 2 . The O 2 may be removed by reaction with other components in the gases by passing the gases over a Pt-group metal catalyst, the C0 2 being then scrubbed out by an absorbent, e.g. an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of a simple amino acid, which is regenerated by steam and recycled to the scrubber. The recovered C0 2 is delivered to the feedstock in an amount to provide an H 2 to C mole ratio of at least 2 and both are mixed with steam before going to the furnace. Purge gas rich in H 2 is taken from the methanol synthesis stage for mixing with the fuel supplied to the furnace burner, and flashed-off gas, including dimethyl ether, from the synthesis stage is delivered to the flue gas for reaction with the O 2 .
