Abstract
1,194,084. Microwave heating. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 17 April, 1968 [18 April, 1967; 6 Nov., 1967], No. 18229/68. Heading H5H. [Also in Division H1] Apparatus for heating insulators and poor conductors by high-frequency dielectric loss comprises a cavity resonator formed by a conductive helix 2 arranged coaxially within and electrically connected to a conductive cylinder 21, the cavity being supplied by an oscillator 7 which is sustained by reactive power from the cavity. As shown, the cylinder 1 is earthed and connected at 5 to one end of the helix 2 and the helix is connected to the anode P through capacitor 8. The helix 2 is hollow and watercooled. An automatic tuning capacitor 9 adjusts the oscillator frequency to the resonant frequency of the cavity. A connection 10 formed anywhere on helix 2 enables it to be connected to grid G through capacitor 11 and to earth via the series-connected inductance 12, ammeter 13 and resistance 14. The cavity acts as a quarter-wave resonator. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the helix 2 is connected at both ends to cylinder 1 and the cavity acts as a half-wave resonator. A supporting dielectric tube 3 may be provided for helix 2. Work 4 may be screwed into the helix or it may be rotated and/or moved axially in the helix. The cylinder 1 may be closed at both ends and evacuated or filled with gas under pressure. The cavity may be used to obtain single crystals of alumina, titanium oxide or barium titanate. The apparatus can be used for sintering ceramics, heating plastics for moulding and shaping, continuously heating frozen food, ionizing gas or for heating babies' feeding bottles.
