Abstract
1,193,449. Strap tensioning devices. THOMAS & BETTS CORP. 2 Aug., 1967, No. 35545/67. Heading F2G. A manually-operable strap tightening and cutting tool comprises a body 12 into which a strap 24 can be drawn, a rocker arm 15 movably connected to the body, a cutter portion 20 adapted to engage the strap upon movement of the arm 15, a spring 18 arranged to oppose movement of the arm, and strap gripping means movable with respect to the tool body; a handle 25 is movably connected to the body and there are rigid plate means, i.e. a cam plate 21, operatively connecting the handle to the arm 15, and a tension plate 30 connecting the strap gripping means to the handle so that an operative tension stroke of the handle causes a strap held by the strap gripping means to be drawn into the tool body by a corresponding amount. The connections between the handle, cam plate and tension plate is such that a force applied to the handle to move a strap beyond the furthest point that it can be drawn into the tool by one or more operative tension strokes of the handle causes the cam plate to move the arm 15 against the spring 18 so as to engage the cutter 20 with the strap thereby to cut the strap. In operation, a pawl 35, pivoted on the tension plate 30 and biased against a flange 39 on the plate, grips the strap 24 between itself and the flange when the handle 25 is moved towards the grip 13 and on release the handle the plate and pawl return to the initial positions as seen in the Figure whereby the pawl, on striking the nosing 40, disengages from the strap; by repeated movement of the handle the strap is drawn progressively through the tool and tensioned around an object A. When further movement of the strap into the tool offers sufficient resistance to prevent movement of the handle about a pin 26, the handle pivots about a pin 31 since the plate 30 is frictionally lockedto the strap 24 by the pawl 35 and at this stage the cam plate 21 is rotated so that the flanged ends 22, 16 of the plate 21 and rocker arm 15 respectively to abut and cause the arm to rotate and the cutter 20 to move downwardly to cut the strap.
