Abstract

Power actions.-Power from a continuously rotating shaft 1 is clutched to an epicyclic gear 3, 4, 5 by the binary selection of electromagnets 12. Operation of a magnet 12 attracts an armature 11 and a depending part engages a pin 27 projecting from a pawl 6 which moves a tooth 16 behind a cyclicly oscillated drive bar 18 which is common to all mechanisms. Movement of the bar 18 draws the pawl 6 clockwise and also a lever 2 upon which the pawl is mounted. A planet wheel 3 mounted on the lever 2 engages a sun gear 5 and an internal gear 4 which latter is accordingly rotated to form part of a type-selection action, a type-carriage movement, or operate an escapement mechanism. After the drive bar 18 has reached the operative dead-centre position determined by the cams 25, 26 the lever 2 is moved counter-clockwise and an arm 13 of the pawl 6 reaches a pin 14, tooth 16 disengages, and a rubber block 19 is compressed which causes relatching of tooth 8 of the pawl 6. The mechanism has the advantage of a silent jerk-free movement and only light energizing force is necessary to overcome the difference in tension of springs 7 and 15. Summation devices.-The magnets 12 may be operated in accordance with a binary code and the movements of the epicyclic gearing 3, 4, 5 may be aggregated.
