Abstract
1,191,504. Glazed ceramic article. AMERICAN CAN CO. 7 Sept., 1967 [8 Sept., 1966], No. 40910/67. Heading C1J. A low-density ceramic article comprises a fired ceramically-bonded mixture of not more than 70% clay, not less than 30% low-density aggregate and a surface coating of glaze. The article is made by mixing clay, low-density aggregate and water, shaping the article and drying so as to remove a portion of the water therefrom, glazing and thereafter firing the article. The clay may comprise ball clay, kaolin, talc, flint, feldspar, wollastonite and bentonite. The low density aggregate is preferably vermiculite but may be diatomaceous earth, perlite or silica gel. An organic binder such as a starch compound, a dextrin compound, a cellulose gum polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl pyrrolidone may be included in the mixture in the amount up to 4% bywt. An internal mould release agent such as paraffin oil and an external mould release agent such as a coating of stearic acid may be used, the former being burnt out before firing.
