Abstract

1,191,550. Thermionic cathode constructions. TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 24 Dec., 1968 [27 Dec., 1967], No. 61229/68. Heading H1D. A dispenser cathode comprises a heater 12 housed in insulation 11 within a hollow chamber 10 defined by nested inner and outer circumferential walls and a top plate 14 supporting the porous impregnated electron emissive layer 16, and a cylinder 17, preferably metallic, which is disposed spaced from and at least partly coextensive with the inner wall of the channel 10 to reduce heat losses therefrom. Preferably the chamber is annular and the heater 12 is an insulated annular coil disposed in alumina powder insulation 11. Emissive layer 16 may be of porous tungsten filled with a mixture of the oxides of aluminium, barium and calcium in the ratio 3 : 5 : 2 which is activated by heating to 1600-1700‹ C. In the Fig. 4 embodiment (not shown), the annular plate 14 is integrally formed with the inner and outer circumferential walls of the channel 10 and a separate annular disc closes the bottom of the channel. The channel may also, for example, be square or hexagonal in shape.
