1,191,306. Aryl sulphonyl cinnamonitrile derivatives. KOPPERS CO. Inc. 31 May, 1967, No. 33668/69. Divided out of 1,191,305. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions C3, C4 and D1] The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein R 1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical C 1-5 , R 2 is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-5 alkoxy radical, R 3 is an alkoxy C 1-5 radical, which is ortho- or metato the #-carbon atom of the ethylenic linkage when R 2 is a hydrogen atom, which are prepared by reacting the appropriately substituted benzaldehyde with the desired (phenylsulphonyl) - acetonitrile. The compounds fluoresce under U.V. light and may be used as optical brighteners, in ink formulations.
