Abstract

1,190,884. Curving. KAUFMANN TOOL & ENG. CORP. 21 March, 1968 [21 March, 1967], No. 13792/68. Heading B3E. A two-roll sheet metal rolling machine having a first roller which has a resilient periphery, a second roller which has a rigid periphery and is carried by a pivoted lever at a point spaced from the pivot, force-multiplying means which act on the lever to move the second roller to and from a position in which the rollers are together for rolling purposes and variable control means for determining the forming pressure developed between the rollers when they are together. The machine comprises a frame consisting of two horizontal plates 12a and 12b which are spaced apart by side plates 12c and supported on legs 16. A drive motor (18), Fig. 1 (not shown), is supported on a platform near the base of the legs, and drives a sprocket 32 through a speed reducer and a chain 30. The first roller comprises a urethane rubber sleeve 40 mounted on a cylinder 38 which is keyed to a shaft 34, to which the sprocket 32 is secured. The shaft 34 passes through a sleeve 35 which is rotatably supported between the plates 12a and 12b by bearings 36 and 37. The second roller 42 is of steel and has an integral shaft 44 which passes through a sleeve 45 which is rotatably supported by bearings 46 and 47 carried at opposite ends of an outer sleeve 48. The outer sleeve 48 is welded to one end of a lever 50, which is pivoted intermediate its ends on a pin 56 the ends of which are journalled in bushes in the plates 12a and 12b. The other end of the lever 50 is pivotally connected to one end of a toggle linkage 89, 91 which is actuated by a fluid cylinder 93 mounted on trunnions 94. The other end of the toggle linkage is pivotally connected at 88 to one end of a lever 87 which is supported on a pivot pin 86 mounted between the plates 12a and 12b. A manually operated screw 112 is supported for rotary movement only in a pivoted block 106 and engages a nut on the lever 87. By rotating the screw 112 the position of the abutment end of the toggle linkage can be varied so that the relative positions of the first and second rollers are similarly varied when the toggle linkage is in the straight line position. A larger diameter cylinder may be used with the roller 42 and is supported during use by an outwardly projecting flange 62 on the roller 42 and by the outwardly turned ends 82 of two supports 80 which depend from a bracket 64, 66, 68, 70 which is bolted to the lever 50. In a first modification, Fig. 7, the first roller comprises a urethane rubber facing 144 secured to a frustoconical plate 138 which is attached to and driven by a bevel wheel 136 mounted on a horizontal shaft 134. The bevel wheel 136 is driven by a pinion 120 mounted on the shaft 34. The second roller is a frusto-conical steel roller 146. In a second modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the second roller 146 as in the first modification is retained and co-operates with a similarly shaped urethane rubber covered roller carried on an inclined spindle, the angle between the axes of the rollers being equal to the included angle of the conical surface of the first roller.
