A blank of material, from which a coffin of conventional shape or parts thereof can be erected, comprises an elongated base panel which will form the base of the coffin when erected and which tapers to each end from a point intermediate its ends, which point preferably is nearer to one end of the base panel than to the other end; formed integrally with each side of the base panel is a further panel which will form one of the sides of the coffin when erected and which has a length corresponding to the length of the adjacent side edge cf the base of the coffin when erected. Either the base panel or one of the further panels may be extended at each end thereof to provide panels which will form 'the ends of the coffin when erected; alternatively, each further panel may be extended at opposed ends to provide such panels. One of the further panels may be formed integrally, at the side thereof which is not attached to the base panel, with an extension panel which will form the lid of the coffin when erected. The blank may be made of solid board but preferably is made of corrugated cardboard material, for example triple corrugated cardboard, i.e. fibrebcard. A preferred construction of the blank is illustrated in Figure 1 which is self-explanatory; after erection from the blank, see Figure 2 (not shown), the surface of the resulting coffin may be finished for example by flock spraying or by application of a wood veneer, and the coffin may be provided with conventional internal linings and/or external decorative handles.
