Abstract

1,190,266. Glass manufacture. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. 13 April, 1967 [20 April, 1966], No. 17306/66. Heading C1M. [Also in Division F4] Articles for use in the manufacture of glass comprise a core of refractory metal or alloy, having a melting point not less than 1900‹ C. and not being molybdenum or tungsten or an alloy of molydbenum or tungsten, and a sheath of a platinum group metal or of an alloy based on at least one metal of the platinum group, in which the oxides of the core metal or alloy are less volatile than the oxides of molybdenum at operating temperatures between 1100‹ and 1500‹ C. Preferably the core comprises the metal or an alloy of Va; Nb; Ta or Cr and the sheath is Pt or a Pt base alloy. A barrier layer of refractory material between the core and sheath may be provided and consist of refractory carbides, silicides, borides, sulphides, nitrides or oxides.
