Abstract

1,190,135. Diphenylene derivatives. UCB (UNION CHIMIQUE-CHEMISCHE BEDRIJVEN) S.A. 14 April, 1969 [7 June, 1968], No. 27139/68. Heading C2C. The invention. relates to diphenylene derivatives of the formula in which X denotes hydrogen or halogen, at least one X denoting halogen, and R denotes an aliphatic radical containing at least one hydroxyl group. The compounds are obtainable by reacting a compound of the formula in which Hal denotes a halogen atom, with a mercaptan of the formula RSH in the presence of a strong base, preferably in an organic medium. Alternatively, the compounds may be prepared by reacting a dithiol of the formula with a halohydrin of the formula R-Hal in the presence of an acid acceptor. An example is given. The products are useful as components in the manufacture of synthetic resins.
