Abstract
1,189,641. Support for thermally-insulated piping. THERMAC INSULATIONS Ltd., and G. A. FORBES. 16 June, 1967 [17 March, 1966], No. 11757/66. Heading F2P. A thermal insulation for pipe, or ducting, comprises a support member 1 of heat-insulating material which is adapted to surround at least the load-bearing surface of the pipe, or duct, at a point of suspension thereof, a protective sleeve, or cover, of metal, or plastics, material which covers the external surface of the shaped support member 1, and a metal saddle or liner, 9, provided on the internal surface of said support member to receive, or support, rolling bearings 11 for reducing friction between the support member and the pipe, or duct. As shown, the heat insulating support member 1, made, e.g. of asbestos fibrecement or -clay, asbestos wood, or heavy duty cork, comprises a half-ring member and the protective sleeve 3 has lateral extensions 4. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), a pair of support members with sleeves (3) are arranged to encompass a pipe, or duct, which is located in position by a suspension clip (5). The two half-ring support members may be replaced by a complete ring, or collar, or by a plurality of segmental pieces surrounding, or partly surrounding, the pipe or duct. The protective cover 3 may be formed from a single sheet with its longitudinal edges abutting or overlapping, or comprise a plurality of segments in overlapping relationship. Further insulating material inserts (6) can be placed within the lateral extensions (4) of the cover (3) to abut the insulating material, not shown, of the duct (2), the ends (4) of the cover (3) overlapping a similar kind of plastics cover, not shown, from the pipe insulating material. In a modification, Fig. 4, not shown, the support member (1) is provided with a liner (9<SP>2</SP>) which has depressions (10) to receive ball or roller, bearings (11). In a further modification, Fig. 3, not shown, ball or roller-bearings (11), retained in a cage (12), are located between a plain surface liner (9<SP>1</SP>) and the pipe (2). The ball or roller-bearings may be arranged in rows longitudinally, or circumferentially, of the pipe (2) or both. On erection of a pipe the support 1 and sleeve 3 may be secured to the pipe, e.g. by screws, pop rivets, or bands, before the pipe is slung in position.
