In a photographic type-composing machine, comprising means for projecting the images of type-face characters one at a time progressively on to a sensitized surface from a character matrix so that lines of text are composed on the surface in accordance with information previously applied to a control tape, the progressive projection of characters on to the surface is carried out, for at least part of the surface, two or more times, each time using a different character matrix and using only that information on the tape which is appropriate to the matrix being used. A perforated control tape may contain for each character, coordinate information indicating the co-ordinates of the character in the matrix and which matrix is appropriate for those co-ordinates to give the desired character. As shown, Fig. 5, the light path 5 to the sensitized surface may be interrupted by a vane 3 which is pivoted at 4 and movable by a piston 1. This piston is actuable by air from a valve 8 which is manually settable to a number of alternative positions such that when a character read from the tape does not correspond to the matrix being used at that time air is admitted, via appropriate combinations of lines X, Y or Z to actuate piston 1 and block the light path.
