Abstract

1,188,809. Papermaking. BLACK CLAWSON CO. 11 July, 1967 [11 July, 1966], No. 31800/67. Heading D2A. A press for making extensible paper comprises a press roll with a smooth low-friction surface forming a nip with an intermediate roll which has a resilient high-friction surface that can expand and contract as it passes through the nip, means for driving the press roll, and a backup roll to support the intermediate roll to make the nip pressure uniform along the rolls. As shown, the press roll 11 and backup roll 22 have much larger diameters than the intermediate roll 15, and are independently driven. The press roll has a smooth low-friction outer surface 13 and has a hollow interior 14 for steam heating. The intermediate roll 15 is offset from the plane 28 through the axes of the other two rolls, and comprises a soft rubber sleeve mounted on a solid steel core. The rolls 15 and 22 are independently adjustable. A paper web W is directed from a guide roll 30 into the nip between rolls 11 and 15.
