Abstract
1,188,889. Vinylidene fluoride polymers. ASAHI GLASS K.K. 19 June, 1968 [20 June, 1967; 5 Aug., 1967], No. 29306/68. Heading C3P. A vinylidene fluoride homopolymer or copolymer is produced by polymerizing vinylidene fluoride either alone or in admixture with one or more olefinically unsaturated monomers copolymerizable therewith, polymerization being effected in a condensed system comprising at least one solvent for the vinylidene fluoride, and the olefinically unsaturated monomer(s), if present, which solvent is a saturated fluorochlorohydrocarbon or fluorohydrocarbon which has a polymerization rate accelerating effect, the condensed system being subjected to ionizing radiation during the polymerization. The term 'condensed system' means a system in which the temperature and pressure of the polymerization and the concentration of the oompound(s) to be polymerized are such that substantially all of the polymerization takes place in a liquid phase comprising the compound(s) to be polymerized, the fluorine-containing saturated hydrocarbon solvent and, after initiation of the polymerization, the resulting polymerization product. The polymer product is insoluble in the solvent. A gasphase polymerization may occur simultaneously with the liquid-phase polymerization, but only to an insignificant extent. Partial polymerization may be carried out and the polymerization completed in the absence of irradiation and catalyst. In the examples vinylidene fluoride, hexafluoropropylene, chlorotrifluoroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, vinyl fluoride, ethylene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate and methyl methacrylate are polymerized in the presence of trichlorotrifluoroethane, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, octafluorocyclobutane, dichlorodifluoromethane, difluoroethane, trichloromonofluoromethane, monochlorodifluoromethane, and monochlorodifluoroethane.
