Abstract

A polymer composition comprises an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, an olefinically unsaturated N-alkylol amide of formula wherein R 3 is a hydrogen or C 1-4 alkyl group and R 4 is a hydrogen or C 1-8 alkyl group and n is an integer from 1 to 8, and a bis-(#-haloalkyl) alkenyl phosphonate of the formula wherein R 5 is a hydrogen or a methyl group and X is bromine or chlorine, interpolymerized together. One or more other vinylidene monomers may be interpolymerized therewith. In the examples, (1) ethyl acrylate, (2) bis- (2-chloroisopropyl) isopropenyl phosphonate, or bis-(2-chloroethyl) vinyl phosphonate, (3) acrylic acid and (4) N-methylol acrylamide or N-butoxymethylacrylamide are polymerized in an aqueous medium in the presence of sodium lauryl polyethoxy sulphate, ammonium persulphate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium metabisulphite, hydroxy ethyl cellulose and the sodium salt of a naphthalenesulphate-formaldehyde condensate. The polymer may be cured.
