Abstract

1,188,293. Charging batteries. WIPAC DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 2 Aug., 1967 [18 Aug., 1966; 5 Jan., 1967], Nos. 37111/66 and 782/67. Heading H2H. [Also in Division G3] A battery charging system wherein a battery 2 is charged from a variable-speed A.C. generator 1 by way of a rectifying diode 3 includes a thyristor 7 in parallel with the generator 1 and a series circuit of resistors 5, 6 and Zener diode 4 in parallel with the battery 2. When the battery voltage is low the Zener diode does not reach its breakdown voltage, thus the thyristor is not triggered and all the generated current passes to the battery. As the battery voltage increases the Zener diode breaks down for increasing periods, the thyristor becomes conductive for increasing times and diverts more and more current away from the battery thus preventing the battery from overcharge and maintaining the battery voltage at a desired value. If desired the diode 3 may be replaecd by a full-wave rectifier bridge. In a further embodiment the Zener diode circuit is connected in parallel with the generator.
