Abstract
1,187,929. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY. 27 March, 1969 [6 May, 1968], No. 21438/68. Heading G6C. A fuel pin for use in a fast breeder reactor fuel element which includes a cluster of parallel metal-sheathed fuel pins intended for operation at temperatures of at least 700‹ C. has its fissile fuel separated from its metal sheath by an interlayer in which natural or depleted uranium metal predominates. The interlayer may be in intimate contact with the sheath, or alternatively may be bonded to the sheath by a good heat-conducting material such as sodium, or still further there may be a compatibility barrier between the interlayer and sheath where necessary. The interface between the interlayer and fissile fuel may include grooves or depressions on either or both of the interlayer and fuel surfaces so as to provide a measure of voidage. Alternatively, or in addition, the interlayer and/or the fuel can be provided with distributed voidage so that its/their density does not exceed 80% of theoretical. A uranium alloy which does not undergo phase changes within the operating temperature range envisaged (700-800‹ C.) is used for the interlayer, e.g. a U-Mo alloy. The sheath and interlayer may be co-extruded in order to obtain intimate contact between them. The fissile fuel may be mixed UO 2 /PuO 2 , mixed UC/PuC, PuO 2 alone, or PuC alone. Where carbide fuel is employed it is convenient to employ a sodium bond between interlayer and sheath, since sodium is compatible with carbide fuel. Stainless steel may be employed as the sheathing material. U-Mo alloys are not wholly compatible with stainless steel at the operating temperatures envisaged and a compatibility barrier consisting of a thin coating of Al 2 O 3 on the sheath interior or interlayer exterior may be necessary. Alternatively, electroplating with a suitable inert metallic material may be employed. Otherwise the sheathing material may comprise niobium or vanadium.
