Abstract

1,187,785. Chromate-coated chromium plated steel. FUJI IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd. March 28, 1967 [March 26, 1966; Nov.11, 1966], No.14086/67. Heading C7B. Chromate-coated chromium plated steel strip is produced by first electro-plating it with chromium to a thickness of from 0À0016 to 0À1Á and thereafter subjecting the chromium-plated strip to electrolysis as a cathode in an aqueous bath containing chromic acid but free of metallic chromium electro-plating catalysts (this exclusion not covering silicofluoride ions) to form on it a chromate coating of thickness up to 0À1 mg Cr/dm<SP>2</SP> as measured by a test defined in the Specification. The steel strip treated may have a matt surface e.g. of roughness 0À8 to 3Á r.m.s. as in Specification 1,125,495, and the doubly treated strip may have a final coating of an organic film-former e.g. a resin or lacquer applied to it. The chromating bath may contain 10 to 150 g/1 CrO 3 but if silicofluoride is present, preferably Na 2 SiF6, the bath contains 10 to 100 g/1 CrO 3 and 1 to 2À5 g/1 SiF 6 . The bath may be used at 10 to 70‹ C. with a current density of 1 to 20 amps/ dm<SP>2</SP> and a treating time of 0À2 to 3 seconds. In an example cold rolled steel sheet is electrolytically degreased in dilute caustic soda solution at 90‹ C.; washed with water; acid pickled in dilute sulphuric acid; washed; electro-plated with chromium from a sulphuric acid catalyzed chromic acid bath at 50‹ C. with a current density of 40 amps/dm<SP>2</SP> for 1 second; cathodically chromated from a bath containing 50 g/ CrO 3 and 2 g/1 Na 2 SiF s at 40‹ C. with a current density of 5 amps/dm<SP>2</SP> for 2 seconds; and finally coated with an organic lacquer of the type described in Specification 939,136. The chromium plating bath may also be as described in that Specification viz 130 to 170 g/l Cr0 3 , 0À2 to 0-4 g/l H 2 SO 4 , and 3 to 7 g/l Na 2 SiF 6 and may be used at about 50‹ C. with a current density of 20 to 80 amps/dm<SP>2</SP> for a treatment time of 5 to 1À25 seconds.
