Abstract

1,187,665. Laminating presses. ISAAC BRAITHWAITE & SON ENGS. Ltd. 18 June, 1968 [22 July, 1967], No. 33813/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] A press, wherein textile pieces may be laminated together by heat and pressure between two surfaces, is characterized in that (i) one surface is movable relative to the other and is formed by a flexible sheet 48 which is bonded to a flexible tubular gaiter 32 bonded to a base-plate 20 so that a hollow chamber is defined by said sheet, gaiter and base-plate, and (ii) said chamber is inflated by supplying gas under pressure and deflated by removing said gas, sheet 48 moving respectively towards and away from the other surface. As shown, the lower surface is formed by conveyer 14 which carries articles 16, 18 for pressing and moves over stationary, heated member 10. Pipes, e.g. 30, are provided for the supply of air from a compressor and its removal by means of a suction pump. The sheet 48 abuts a perforated baffle plate 60 in its retracted position. Sheet 48 may comprise stainless steel, aluminium, plastics, rubber, glass fabric or a glass fabric-rubber laminate. Gaiter 32 may comprise silicone rubber or silicone-impregnated polyester fabric. In operation, sheet 48 becomes heated after repeated contact with heated member 10, thereby aiding pressing. Alternatively (Figs. 7-9, not shown), the flexible sheet 48 may form the lower pressing surface, and the press may have a " scissors " action.
