Abstract

A reel of the type wherein metallic annular flanges have radial or substantially radial folds therein is characterized in that the workpieces from which the annular flanges are shaped consist of curved flat metallic strips 20 prior to the folds being formed therein and the strips bent into annular shape. The reel is further characterized in that the depth of the folds is uniform or substantially so from the inner to the outer periphery of the flange. The folds may be of tapering width with the spacing between the constant width or vice versa. A method of producing the flange of the above reel consists in forming in each of a number of curved metallic strips a succession of folds of tapering depth using male and female die members 23 and 24, and then bending the strips collectively to form an annulus having radial folds of uniform depth. In an alternative method, the folds and annular shaping are performed simultaneously using male and female die members 32 and 32.
