Abstract
1,187,032. Coating. PORVAIR Ltd. 7 March, 1967 [7 March, 1966; 11 Jan., 1967], Nos. 10528/67 and 1610/67. Divided out of 1186342. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Flexible sheet material comprises strength imparting microporous, elastomeric, polyurethane material free from preformed fibrous sheet material having at least one integral fibrous surface resembling a suede leather or the flesh surface of natural leather. The sheet material is made by forming a spreadable mixture comprising a solution of a film forming plastics material in a solvent, forming a continuous layer of the mixture on a temporary support formed of sintered particles treating the layer on the support with a coagulating liquid which is a non-solvent for the polymer but is at least partially miscible with the solvent, so as to coagulate the polymer into a sheet, and washing with fresh coagulating liquid or continuing the treatment until all the solvent has been removed, drying the resultant sheet material and stripping it from the temporary support. The support may be a sheet of sintered granulated plastics material such as high density polyethylene, or may be formed by a sintered layer of granules of polymeric plastics material on a smooth metal surface. The support may be first wetted with a solution of a substance which is soluble in the coagulating liquid e.g. an aqueous solution of sodium chloride so as to be left with a coating of the substance which subsequently dissolved by the coagulating liquid e.g. water thereby facilitating the stripping of the sheet material from the support. In example 1 a layer of a solution of a polyester-based polyurethane in N,N-dimethyl formamide is doctor knife coated onto a smooth surface of a sintered high density polyethylene layer on a metal surface, and the material immersed in and washed with water at 70‹ Centigrade, dried and the layer stripped from the temporary support. The material can be used as suede leather in clothing or as a shoe upper, glove and upholstery materials. In example 2 the product of example 1 is coated with a solution of a polyurethane in dimethylcyclohexanone containing sodium chloride as removable filler, and then with a surface coating of a solution of a polyurethane in dimethyl formamide also containing sodium chloride and a pigment. The composite sheet is immersed in water at 20‹C. and then washed in water at 80‹C. before drying at 100‹C. and stripping from the temporary support. In example 3 a removable filler e.g. sodium chloride is also included in the composition for making the vapour permeable sheet material.
