Abstract
1,186,630. Nuclear fuel; plutonium nitride. NUKEM NUKLEAR-CHEMIE UND-METALLURGIE G.m.b.H. 9 Aug., 1968 [9 Aug., 1967], No. 38060/68. Headings G6C and G6R. [Also in Division C1] A nitride of uranium and/or plutonium, with or without zirconium nitride, is prepared from the corresponding fluoride or ammonium double fluoride by reaction with ammonia at high temperature to form a higher nitride which is decomposed in vacuo to the mononitride. In examples uranium mononitride is made from UF 4 , UF 3 or ammonium pentafluorouranate, plutonium mononitride from PuF 4 , uranium and zirconium mixed mononitrides from UF 4 and ZrF 4 , and uranium and plutonium mixed mononitrides from UF 3 and PuF 3 . The nitrides are suitable for use as nuclear fuel.
