Abstract
1,186,172. Turret lathes. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. 27 Jan., 1967 [28 Jan., 1966; 3 Feb., 1966; 17 June, 1966; 14 July, 1966; 28 Oct., 1966], Nos. 3997/66, 4845/66, 27148/66, 31722/66 and 48489/66. Headings B3B and B3T. A machine tool comprises a chuck 2 and means to move the chuck in two orthogonal directions so that the geometric centre of the workpiece 1 can be positioned at any point in a plane defined by the work axis and a tool tip 14. The chuck 2 is rotated by an hydraulic motor in a quill 4 movable under hydraulic or electric control in a headstock 5 movable vertically by a lead screw or hydraulic means. The machine frame carries a two-position tool-store 9 having two double sets of tools 10, 11 and 12, 13. One set contains end-working tools such as drills and the other set turning tools. The turning tools act from beneath the workpiece. The feed movement is therefore obtained by downward headstock movement and traverse by forward quill movement. In modifications, the headstock slideway 6 moves laterally to traverse the work instead of providing a quill and can carry a slide movable towards conventional tools to provide a feed. In a further modificatjon, non-operative tools are retracted so that more can be provided without cutting-interference. Numerical control with feed-back is used. In the machine of Figs. 3 and 4, a spindle 103 is moved axially by a fluid actuator, is rotated by a fluid motor 106 and is moved laterally by eccentric cylinders. The outer cylinder is mounted in a concentric indexable drum to enable the line of spindle adjustment to be moved to any radial position. Only one of the eccentric cylinders may be rotated and the spindle be constrained by slides to move in a straight line. A tooling unit 102 is pivotable about trunnions 111, 112 and, on three faces, carries plates 115 bearing end-working tools 118 and, on the fourth face, carries milling cutters 119 and drills 120. The latter are driven by individual hydraulic motors. The machine also carries a milling attachment 121 and indexable turning-tool discs 125. (In a modification, the turning tools are mounted on a plate 115). The motor 106 can index the spindle 103 and can enable the machine to cut cams or threads. In the machine of Figs. 6 and 7, tool holders 316 carrying turning tools 320 are clamped in cylindrical formation to form a turret 315 which is indexed by an hydraulic motor. The holders also carry boring bars, drills, reamers, and screwcutting heads 321. A rotatable chuck 317 is movable vertically between the positions shown and also horizontally by a lead screw or hydraulic means. The chuck is moved before each operation until its axis lies in the same horizontal plane as the tip of the indexed tool to be used. In the machine of Fig. 9, a member 502 carrying a turret 505 and a faceplate 506 is rotatable about an axis 515. A spindle 514 for carrying a workpiece is mounted in a headstock 513 movable axially on a slide 512 movable vertically in a box-frame 509, movable transversely on a base-plate 507. The faces 516 of the turret carry milling cutters, drills, boring tools, a datum gauging pad or lathe tools. The faceplates 506 can carry lathe tools. The member 502 may be indexed through less than a right-angle.
