Abstract
1,186,029. Terephthalic acid. MOBIL OIL CORP. 6 Nov., 1967 [21 Feb., 1967], No. 50349/67. Heading C2C. Terephthalic acid is prepared by a continuous oxidation process which comprises continuously charging a C 2-4 fatty acid as a reaction solvent, para-xylene, water, a cobalt-containing oxidation catalyst a methylenic ketone and an excess of a gas containing O 2 under an O 2 partial pressure of 50-1000 p.s.i. at substantially constant rates into a confined reaction zone; reacting the charge, under sufficient pressure to maintain a liquid phase in a substantially uniform reaction mixture throughout the reaction, in the reaction zone at a substantially constant and sufficiently elevated temperature and for a period sufficient to oxidize at least 90% of the para-xylene to terephthalic acid in the presence of the excess O 2 while continuously withdrawing reaction product slurry from said reaction zone, and withdrawing unreacted oxygen from the mixture at a rate corresponding from 2% to 25% of the O 2 charging rate.
