Abstract
1,185,363. Microwave heating. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd., and T. B. JAWOR. 5 June, 1968 [6 June, 1967], No. 26098/67. Heading H5H. Microwave heating apparatus comprises a wave-guide WG formed into a closed loop such that microwave energy not absorbed by the material being heated is recirculated, the plane of polarization of the microwave radiation being rotated through 90 degrees during travel around the loop, and the heated material is conveyed through a portion of the loop, for example on a conveyer belt CB in an enclosing tube ET of insulating material. The material is pellets P of synthetic resin which may, alternatively, be inserted in pockets in a carrier insert CI of a rotatable disc RD, rotatable in a gap of the waveguide WG to subject different groups of pellets to microwave radiation. The waveguide WG is of rectangular section and is coupled directly to itself by a coupling device CD, a polarization filter F 1 being provided between the T-junction and the source S. The waveguide has a 90-degree twisted section TS, a second polarization filter F 2 , and a sampling coupling SC feeding to a detector unit D and producing an output signal for controlling the output of the source S. A further embodiment uses a coaxial cable CC, Fig. 3 (not shown), to complete the loop, and the waveguide is of circular section. Additional radiant heating is provided either by separate radiant heaters or by making the section of the waveguide WG through which the material passes of electrically conductive material, absorption of the microwave radiation raising the temperature of the waveguide walls such that the waveguide itself acts as a radiant heater.
