Abstract

1,184,389. Washing gases. C.I.T.-COMPAGNIE INDUSTRIELLE DES TELECOMMUNICATIONS. 19 Dec., 1967 [19 Dec., 1966; 25 Sept., 1967], No. 57651/67. Heading B1R. Apparatus for purifying gas comprises a cylindrical metal vessel 31 into which the gas to be purified is introduced tangentially at 32, atomisers in an upper portion of the vessel to spray the gas with a fine mist of a purifying liquid and a duct 35 opening at its lower end into the vessel 3 and having means 36 to control the speed of entry of the gas being purified into the duct, the gas entering the duct being again sprayed with a fine mist of purifying liquid above the means 36 and then passed upwardly over spikes 38 projecting inwardly from the inner wall of the duct before discharge at the top of the duct. The liquid atomisers may be operated with a gas under pressure or as shown have means to give the fine mist produced an electrostatic charge. Again as shown the atomisers 42 in the vessel 31 are arranged on a helical line and one pole of an electrostatic generator 43 is connected to the atomisers 42 and the other to the metal wall of the vessel. The polarity of the charge given to the fine mist may be varied cyclically and in a modification the polarity of the charge given to the fine mist in the vessel 31 may be opposite to that given to the fine mist in the duct 35. The means 36 controlling the speed of entry of the gas into duct 35 comprises a ring of upright blades 11 (Fig. 4, not shown) the position of which can be varied from outside the vessel 31. The spikes 38 which remove excess liquid from the purified gases may be electrically charged at least at their tips. Alternatively they may be hollow and form part of a system including a doublewalled section of the duct 35 through which a cooling liquid may be circulated. The purifying liquid may comprise surface active agents or substances capable of reacting with particular components of the gas to be purified. Thus e.g. alkaline substances may be used to remove acidic oxides and basic sulphate of tri-valent chromium may be used to remove polyphenols.
