Abstract

1,184,279. Copper coating ferrous materials. PYRENE CO. Ltd. Nov.2O, 1968[Nov.28, 1967], No. 55088/ 68. Heading C7F. Ferrous materials are coated with copper by treating with an aqueous acid solution containing Cu ions, H ions and F ions, but no organic inhibitor, at a temperature of 20‹ -70‹ C., the concentration of H ions to F ions being correlated and lying within the area ABCD on the accompanying graph. The solution contains 5-60 g/ 1 of Cu (calculated as CuS0 4 . 5H 2 O) and the immersion time is 15-60 mins. to produce a Cu deposit of 5-30 g/ sg. m. The H ions are preferably supplied by H 2 SO 4 or HF and the F ions by HF or NaF. The solution may also contain NO 3 and Cl ions. The correlation of H to F ions becomes more critical the higher the solution temperature; at 20‹ C. the H ion concentration must be between 0À5 and 7 mols/1 and the F ion concentration 0À1 to 4 mols/ 1, at 55‹ C. the corresponding concentrations are H ion 1À5 to 6 mols/ 1 and the F ion 0À1 to 0À8 mols/1.
