Abstract

1,184,271. Quenching. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT. Sept. 11,1968 [Sept.12, 1967], No.43201/68. Heading C7N. In an apparatus for directly quenching workpieces in water or aqueous solutions direct from a furnace which operates with a controlled atmosphere, the workpieces fall from furnace 1 through an air-tight shaft into a quenching medium 8 in tank 9, and a screening layer 7 is provided in said shaft with water-cooled traps 10 and drip edges 11 arranged therein for condensing any steam deriving from the quenching medium 8. One or more cooled mists 6, of the screening medium may be provided above said screening layer 7, and the shaft is advantageously widened like a funnel at its lower end 12.
