Abstract

1,183,872. Sheet forming. STOREY BROS. & CO. Ltd. 3 July, 1968 [10 April, 1967], No. 16334/67. Heading B5A. A thermoplastic sheet simulating a natural leather is formed by shaping a normally impervious thermoplastic sheet by a vacuum or equivalent fluid pressure process over a former 14 and punching the formed sheet 22 while still over the former by pressing against it a plug 18 provided with spikes or other cutting edges so as to make a large number of small perforations in the surface of the formed sheet 22. The plug 24 (Fig. 6) comprises a backing plate 24 and a resilient pad 30, e.g. of polyurethane foam, which normally marks spikes 28 so that the plug may first be used to form the sheet and then on subsequent harder pressure the spikes are exposed to puncture the sheet. The plug 18 may be engraved so that the formed sheet can be embossed (Fig. 7, not shown). The thermoplastic sheet material may be polyvinyl chloride.
