Abstract

[Also in Division C5] Di-imines of the general formula wherein n is an integer, when n = 1, X is the group -R 2 -N=CR 7 R 6 or and when n is greater than 1 each X is a linkage through a group to the corresponding N atom of a group; R 1 and R 5 are each C 1-24 alkyl, alkenyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl groups; R 3 , R 4 , R 6 and R 7 are each H, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl or hydroxyaryl groups, or each and any of the groups =CR 3 R 7 , = CR 4 R 7 , and = CR 6 R 7 may be taken together to form a cyclic system and R 2 is a straight or branched chain C 2-8 alkylene group, are prepared by reacting a compound of general formula wherein each Y = H, or when n = 1, Y = H or a group -R 2 NH 2 , with an aldehyde, a ketone, a mixture of aldehydes, a mixture of ketones or a mixture of at least one aldehyde and at least one ketone of general formula R 7 .CO.R 8 where R 8 is R 3 , R 4 or R 6 in a ratio of 1 mole of amine per m/2 moles of the reagent R 7 COR 8 wherein m is the number of H atoms bonded to N atoms in a molecule of the amine. In the examples the product of N-alkyl-(C 12-13 )-1,3-propylene diamine and acetaldehyde in a 1 : 1À5 mole ratio is obtained, i.e. R 1 = C 12-13 alkyl, R 2 = -(CH 2 ) 3 -, R 3 = CH 3 , R 4 = CH 3 , R 5 = R 1 , R 6 = CH 3 , R 7 = H and n = 1. The product of C 12 H 25 (NHCHCH 2 CH 2 CH 2 ) 3 NH 2 with acetaldehyde is also exemplified.
