Abstract
1,182,872. Transformers; electric coils. DOW CORNING CORP. 20 March, 1968 [11 April, 1967], No. 13437/68. Headings H1P and H1T. The electrical insulation separating two parts of an electrical induction apparatus, e.g. the concentric low and high voltage windings 17, 21 of a transformer, comprises one or more insulating sheets 23 coated with a resilient material 24 is which are embedded insulating particles 26 which extend above the surface of the coating. The apparatus is impregnated under vacuum with a curable liquid insulating material, e.g. epoxy resin or a silicone resin or elastomer, the particles 26 acting as spacers to allow the liquid to flow through the apparatus. The insulating sheets are preferably formed by coating kraft paper, cloth, insulating plastic or a combination of these with an uncured elastomer. Silica (e.g. zirconium orthosilicate sand), glass beads or particles of cured plastic material such as epoxy resin are dropped on the coating, and the latter is then cured. In a transformer the coated insulating sheets may also be used to separate other layers of turns.
