Abstract

1,182,719. Toothed gearing. BURMAN & SONS Ltd. 13 Dec., 1968 [12 Jan., 1968], No. 1833/68. Heading F2Q. In a rack-and-pinion steering mechanism, a rack 14 is supported opposite a pinion 10 by an annular slipper member 16, urged by a spring 17 into engagement with the rack 14, and by a pad 19 which extends through the slipper member 16 and is urged by a spring 20 into engagement with the rack 14. The spring 17 is located in a counterbore 16b in the slipper member 16, one end engaging the member 16 and the other end engaging a housing cover 18. The pad 19 is preferably formed of a material, such as a synthetic resin, having low frictional resistance to sliding of the rack 14. The surface of the slipper member 16 contacting the rack 14 has a radius of curvature larger than that of the rack.
