Abstract
1,182,595. Air filter; separating gases. B.A.F. FILTERS Ltd. 18 April, 1967 [14 Feb., 1966; 20 April, 1966; 26 Aug., 1966], Nos. 6347/66, 17210/66 and 38346/66. Headings B1L and B1T. [Also in Division F4] A cartridge filter element, for the ventilation intake of a motor vehicle, comprises a polystyrene tube 1 closed by grilles 3 which retain a nylon mat or felt element 4 and a glass fibre mat 5 covered by layers of cotton muslin 6 at the two ends and containing staggered metal or plastics pockets 2 which contain adsorbent. The lower two pockets contain a mixture of soda lime and active carbon, the upper contains silica gel treated with disinfectant. Pockets 2 open through tube 1 for adsorbent replacement, the holes being closed by tape or by an enclosing housing. Air flow is upwards in Fig. 1, sinuously round pockets 2. The element (7) may be enclosed by a two part housing comprising cup-like members fitting one over the other and held together by springs (Fig. 4, not shown). An alternative housing (Fig. 5, not shown) comprises a rectangular case and a lid, which define an internal peripheral groove (23) which receives a separate shell enclosing the filter element, one way round only. The housing is arranged for in-line connection. Figs. 6, 7 (not shown) illustrate a housing whose integral outlet flange (32) forms the cover of the ventilator inlet, and which is made of metal or plastics, and flange 32 is made of transparent plastics. Plate (32) is secured by rotatable, spring- loaded, T-shaped bolts to the louvres of the air inlet to the vehicle's ventilating system.
