Abstract

1,182,429. Windscreen wipers. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 18 July, 1967 [19 Aug., 1966], No. 37249/66. Heading A4F. [Also in Divisions G3 and H2] A battery-fed windscreen wiper motor, having armature 16 and field winding 18, is controlled by a relay comprising coil 14 which opens and closes contacts 15 as the current through the coil increases and decreases, an adjustable resistor 13 determining the operating-voltage of the relay. A compensating coil 17 for the relay is load-responsive to modify the setting of the regulator 14, 15 so that the speed of the motor remains substantially constant. Diode 19 is conductive while the contacts 15 are open. In another arrangement, the contacts control the base current of a transistor in series with the motor. In a further embodiment, the circuit elements 13, 14, 16 and 17 are connected in series with an additional resistor, the relay being designed so that, when the load is above a predetermined value, the contacts move between a closed position, in which the additional resistor is short-circuited, and an open position. If the load on the motor is below the predetermined value, the movable contact oscillates between the open position and a third position in which the elements 13, 14 are short-circuited.
