Abstract
1,182,453. Controlling gelatinization of starch. C.P.C. INTERNATIONAL Inc. 24 Feb., 1967 [24 Feb., 1966], No. 9053/67. Heading B1X. [Also in Division C3] A starch slurry is reacted in a vessel 10 with alkali, e.g. NaOH, and the viscosity of the slurry monitored as the reaction proceeds until a predetermined value is reached when the reaction is stopped. A continuous cyclic procedure is as follows; probe 62 detects that the level of finished product in tank 60 has fallen below a given value, and this initiates the input of water, starch (from tank 84), steam, and caustic alkali (via dilution tank 18) to vessel 10, which is provided with mixing means. The quantity and moment of addition of each substance are programmed. When the viscosity reaches the set value alum is added, and then borax (tanks 92 and 98) and after mixing, the final product is discharged. The product is used as an adhesive.
