Abstract

1,182,048. Infra-red heaters. BARBER MFG. CO. 13 Nov., 1968 [14 Nov., 1967], No. 53933/68. Heading H5H. A radiant heater A, A<SP>1</SP>, includes a heating coil 3, a reflecting surface 5, 5a, and an infra-red emitting surface 13 of high emissivity (as defined), an area greater than 0À1 square metre and emitting the major portion of its radiation in the 3À0 to 5À0 micron wavelength band at an operating temperature of 700‹ F. to 1000‹ F. The reflecting surface 5 is on the interior of a metal cover 1 having a marginal flange 7 by which it is sealingly secured to the similarly shaped base 2, and the lower emitting surface 13 is of a glazed porcelain, as is the upper surface of the base 2 which is of high absorptivity (as defined). In heater A<SP>1</SP>, the cover 1a supports a reflector 50 having a reflective surface 5a and a heat insulating layer 16B of fibreglass wool. The sealed enclosures A, A<SP>1</SP> may be partially evacuated or filled with an inert gas or low heat conductivity gas. The planar circular form heaters A, A<SP>1</SP>, may be made oval, elliptical, square, rectangular, rhomboid or triangular shape in plan and the vertical section may be circular or rectilinear or other shape.
