Abstract

1,181,746. Deflecting propulsive gases. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 19 June, 1968, No. 29185/68. Heading B7G. A thrust reverser for a front fan gas turbine engine, or other engine, comprises a plurality of thrust reverser flaps 24, each pivoted about its centre of pressure 25, the pivot pin at 25 being attached to the double walled casing of a duct 16 in which a front fan 17 rotates. The duct 16 is supported by stays 20 extending radially from the upstream portions of an engine casing 11. The flaps 24 may be pivoted about points 25 from an inoperative position in which they merge with the walls of the duct 16, rearward flow of propulsive gases being unimpeded, to an operative position, Fig. 2, in which flow of gases to the rear of duct 16 is impeded and the. propulsive gases are caused to flow radially through gaps 32 as indicated by arrow A and produce forward thrust. The flow of gases through the radially disposed gaps 32 in the casing of the duct 16 is aided by shaped members 36, which members are movable fore and aft between the two walls 26, 27 of the casing 16 and are connected at their rearward ends to flaps 24 by struts 42. The forward ends of members 36 are connected to rams or screw jacks, so that coupled movement of members 36 and flaps 24 is possible. Loss of propulsive gases through gaps 32 when flaps 24 are in inoperative positions is minimized by mating tongues and recesses 44 and 45 and by mating surfaces 34, 33 on the flaps and casing.
