Abstract

1,180,991. Making steel wire. SCHOLEMANN A.G. 1 May, 1967 [7 May, 1966; 26 Oct., 1966], No. 19961/67. Heading B3A. In a method of making patented steel wire, wherein the wire after leaving the last roll stand 1 is deposited in non-concentric overlapping turns upon a conveyer 5 at a temperature above the austenite conversion temperature, and is cooled by controlled means until the conversion of the wire texture to ferrite and pearlite is finished, the wire, after being deposited upon the conveyer, is maintained above the austenite conversion temperature until the wire texture has attained a grain size not greater than 5 on the ASTM scale. The rolled wire after leaving the roll stand 1 passes through a wire feeding device 2 and is coiled by a tube 14, which rotates about a horizontal axis. An edge 4 tilts the coils horizontally on to the conveyer 5, which passes through a tunnel 6. The laying device 3 and tube 14 are axially movable and guiding tubes 10, mounted on arms 11, are selectively movable into alignment with the device 2, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown). Hence the length of the tunnel 6 may be varied and so the time between coiling the wire and passing it into a cooling tract 7 varied thereby controlling the grain growth of the wire material. The tunnel may be thermally insulated or have heat supplied, either electrically or by gas, the latter being adjusted to provide a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The controlled cooling of the wire is achieved in a tract 7, which may be a lead or salt bath or a fluidized bed. Preferably a fluidized bed is used and it comprises a gas permeable plate, through which a gas is passed, the gas fluidizing a layer of particles of the cooling medium. The space under the plate is divided into chambers, into which the gas is supplied at different temperatures so that the wire passes through a fluid of increasing temperature. Steel wires of low carbon content may be cooled in the wire feeding device 2 down to about 600‹ C. or lower. In this case the wire is not passed through the cooling medium in the tract 7.
