Abstract
1,180,860. Fishing reel. E. F. SMALL. 2 Aug., 1968, No. 37045/68. Heading A1A. A fishing reel of the kind having means 34 at its forward end for retaining the line on a spool 32, and means 36 towards its rear for winding in line when positioned adjacent the retaining means 34, or permitting line to run off the spool 32 when spaced apart is provided with a removable cap 40 having a guide eye 48 for constraining the line to leave the reel substantially parallel to the rod axis, allowing operation under either "open face" or "closed face" conditions. As shown, a body 10 mounts a shaft 18, operable by a handle 20 and driving a sleeve 26 rotatably mounted on a shaft 28 through a ring gear (18a), Fig. 5 (not shown), co-operating with teeth (26a) on the sleeve 26. A spindle 28a connected to the shaft 28 is movable axially by depression of a trigger lever 30 during the back swing of the rod and the spool 32 together with the flyer 36 and cup 34 are thus moved rearwardly, the flyer 36 being latched in rearward position by engagement of a spring ring in a groove in the sleeve 26. On releasing the trigger 30, a spring (S) returns the cup 34 and spool 32 to the forward position allowing the cast to be made, and as the handle 20 is rotated to start reeling in the flyer 36 is released, returning to the pick-up position adjacent the cup 34.
