Abstract

1,180,760. Yarn cores; coated. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 13 Nov., 1967 [14 Nov., 1966], No. 51520/67. Heading B8M. A textile yarn core is provided on its winding surface with a continuous or discontinuous layer of discrete particles of colloidal silica. A process for treating a yarn core to provide a yarn winding surface having a coefficient of friction in the range 0À4-0À6 is characterized by coating the surface with a colloidal silica dispersion to form a dry coating having 0À05-0À5 1b of silica/1000 ft.<SP>2</SP>, the dispersion having a colloidal silica concentration in the range 1-10% by weight, and the silica particles being of such a size that their surface area is 100-500 sq. m/gm. The core is preferably made of paper and the concentration of colloidal silica is preferably in the range 0À15-0À25 lb/1000 ft.<SP>2</SP>.
