Abstract

1,180,671. Tar bonded refractories. GENERAL REFRACTORIES Ltd. 18 Dec., 1968 [29 Feb., 1968], No. 9770/68. Heading C1J. Refractory shapes are obtained by hot mixing graded granular basic refractory and a carbonaceous binder to produce a tar bond and provide a carbon component and 10-30% relative to the binder of one or more suitable nitrated aromatic compounds which melt at a temperature below that of mixing and is not decomposed at the mixing temperature, shaping, and toughening by heating at 230-350‹ C. for several hours. Dolomite and/or magnesite with or without calcia are specified, and to guard the dolomite against hydration it can be dipped in oil and the surplus oil removed before the toughening step.
